What you need to know before you visit

Helmsley Castle is a must-visit for history lovers, walkers, and anyone exploring the charming market town of Helmsley. With over 900 years of history, this impressive ruin has plenty of stories to tell—along with some hidden surprises. Here’s what you need to know before you visit.
A brief history of Helmsley Castle
Originally built in the 12th century by Walter Espec, Helmsley Castle has seen centuries of change. It was transformed into a grand Tudor mansion, then later became a stronghold during the English Civil War. In 1644, it was besieged by Parliamentarian forces, leading to its partial destruction—leaving the striking ruins we see today.
Hidden Gems & Lesser-Known Facts
The ‘Secret’ Chamber – Beneath the ruins lies a hidden chamber that may have been used for storage or as a safe retreat. Though not open to the public, its existence sparks curiosity about life in medieval Helmsley.
A Tudor Mansion, Not Just a Castle – Many visitors are surprised to learn that Helmsley Castle wasn’t just a military fortress. In the 16th century, it was transformed into a luxurious home by the Manners family.
The Duncombe Park Connection – After the Civil War, the castle was abandoned as a residence. In the late 17th century, the Duncombe family acquired the estate and built Duncombe Park, their grand country house, just a short walk away. The castle was left as a romantic ruin within the estate’s landscape.
When Was It Last Lived In? – The Manners family were the last significant residents before the siege of 1644. After the castle’s partial destruction, it was never fully restored as a home. By the 18th century, it was considered an historic landmark rather than a residence.
From Private Estate to Public Heritage – Helmsley Castle remained part of the Duncombe Park estate for centuries. In 1923, it was placed under the care of the Ministry of Works, ensuring its preservation. It later became part of English Heritage, which continues to maintain and protect the site today.
