How to light a wood fired hot tub

Here is an easy guide to show you how to light the wood fired hot tub at Helmsley Meadows
Wood fired hot tubs do not have their own temperature control. Ideally your hot tub should be between 38-42C and this is achieved through the fire in the stove. If the hot tub does get too hot then just leave the cover off and stir the water around with a paddle and it will naturally cool down in time.
The water level should be ideally at least 10cm from the top of the tub and under never below the upper outlet valve of the stove. Put some more water in if it falls below this level.
Steps to light the wood fired hot tub
1. First you place some small logs on the base of the stove towards the back of it. Then place two wood firelighters and a sprinking of pine cones.
2. The stove will now be hot so always wear fire gloves from now on. Sprinkle some more pine cones (you can never have enough) and at least two or three logs placed at angles to create more draft.
3. Then close the door and keep checking the state of the fire and keep inserting more logs to maintain the heat generated by the stove to heat up the water. A full hot tub from cold should take 2 to 3 hours to heat to 40C. You can adjust the vents to increase or reduce the heat of the stove.
4. When the water is at 40C, use a wooden paddle to stir the water. The temperature will fall by about 4-5C. Keep filling the stove with logs as required. When the water is between 38-40C you can then take the cover off and enjoy the hot tub. A glass of fizz is optional.
5. Put one more log in the stove to keep the temperature at the right level when you are in it.
6. Always keep an eye on the temperature as if the fire in the stove is still burning well it will continue to heat up and you dont want to cook. We have found that once it gets above 40C then it is too hot!
7. A sponge placed in the hot tub will soak up any oil from the skin and keep your water fresh.
8. Always put the thermal cover on when you have finished as this will keep the hot tub warm for up to 24 hours. Many of our guests have had a warm tub the next morning to enjoy.
