Tucked away in the heart of Hutton-le-Hole — one of North Yorkshire’s most beautiful villages — you’ll find a truly special place: Ryedale Folk Museum. This open-air museum offers a peaceful wander through the past, with over twenty lovingly preserved buildings that bring rural Yorkshire history to life.

You’ll stroll past thatched cottages, traditional workshops, an old schoolroom, and even a blacksmith’s forge — all nestled among gardens, orchards and green open space. It’s history you can touch, smell and step into. The museum spans over six acres and tells the story of everyday life in the North York Moors from the Iron Age right up to the 1950s.

A Few Fascinating Facts:

🪑 The Cottage Interiors Are All Different Eras
Each building has been dressed to reflect a particular time period. One cottage gives you a glimpse of life in the Tudor era, while another captures the wartime spirit of the 1940s. The details are incredible — from chamber pots to homemade jam labels.

🪓 The Workshops Are Fully Stocked
From wheelwrights to coopers, each workshop is kitted out with the real tools of the trade. It’s a gentle reminder of how self-sufficient rural life once was.

⛏️ A Real Iron Age Roundhouse
One of the newest additions is a reconstructed Iron Age roundhouse, built using ancient techniques and local materials. It’s warm, earthy and surprisingly cosy inside — like a hug from history.

🌿 A Community Creation
The museum started in the 1960s thanks to the vision of local historian Marie Hartley. It’s grown over the years through the passion of volunteers and donations, and remains fiercely proud of its local roots. There are now some 40,000 objects within more than twenty heritage buildings in the open-air museum.

The museum is dog friendly too!

Whether you’re a history buff, love a gentle mooch through a garden, or just fancy a quiet afternoon in a beautiful setting — Ryedale Folk Museum is worth a visit. Even better, it’s just a short drive from the cottage, so you can spend the morning soaking up the past and be back by mid-afternoon for tea in the garden.
