The Best Dog-Friendly Walks Around Helmsley

If there’s one thing Helmsley does well, it’s giving you and your dog the freedom to explore and wander. Wide open moorland, peaceful woodland, riverside paths and gentle routes straight from town — it’s the perfect base for a dog-friendly break in the North York Moors.

Whether you’re here for a weekend of fresh air or a longer, slow-paced escape, these are some of the best dog-friendly walks within easy reach of Helmsley.

1. Helmsley to Rievaulx Abbey (and back through the woods)

Distance: 3–4 miles
Terrain: Easy, woodland paths, farm tracks
Why it’s great for dogs: Shady woodland, streams to paddle in and plenty of sniffing spots.

This classic walk starts right in the Cleveland Car park and winds its way through mixed woodland towards the peaceful ruins of Rievaulx Abbey. It’s a gentle walk, with beautiful views, and lots of places for dogs to explore safely.

Top tip: Stop at Rievaulx for a break at the cafe or just sit and admire the view. It’s one of the most tranquil spots in the Moors.
2. Duncombe Park Circular

Distance: Choose from 2 miles to 6 miles
Terrain: Parkland, riverside paths
Why it’s great for dogs: Wide-open space, lots of shade, and great off-lead opportunities where livestock isn’t present.

Duncombe Park is one of the prettiest estates in the area, with grand parkland and sweeping views across the Rye Valley. The shorter loops are perfect for a morning leg-stretch, while the longer routes lead deeper into the woods.

Parking: Easy access from Helmsley.
Note: Dogs must stay on lead in certain areas — especially during nesting season — but there’s still plenty of space to roam.

3. Helmsley Castle & River Rye Loop

Distance: 1.5–2 miles
Terrain: Flat, riverside
Why it’s great for dogs: Quiet, gentle, perfect for older dogs or low-key afternoon strolls.

A simple, soul-soothing loop from town that takes in Helmsley Castle, a peaceful stretch of the River Rye, and pretty views back across the rooftops. Ideal for a little wander before heading for a cosy meal in one of Helmsley’s dog-friendly pubs.

4. Bridestones, Crosscliff & Blakey Topping (a little further, worth the drive)

Distance: 3–4 miles (short loop)
Terrain: Moorland, woodland, open views
Why it’s great for dogs: Varied landscapes, long-scent trails, quiet paths.

This is a real gem if you want something a touch wilder. Dramatic rock formations, open heather moorland and peaceful woodland sections make it a brilliant adventure for dogs who love to explore. Expect wide skies and that deep, quiet calm you only get on the Moors.

5. Hawnby & River Rye Valley

Distance: 4–6 miles
Terrain: Rolling countryside, riverside stretches
Why it’s great for dogs: Mix of terrain keeps it exciting; great paddling spots.

Hawnby is one of those “worth the wiggle” drives — a tiny village surrounded by glorious countryside. Walks here feel untouched and wonderfully peaceful. If your dog loves a mix of open fields and riverside tracks, this is the one. The Owl at Hawnby is also a great stop to have some lunch.
