Top Things to Do in Helmsley in the Winter Months

Winter in Helmsley is a season for slowing down. The crowds thin, the landscape softens, and the town settles into a quieter, more reflective rhythm. It’s the perfect time to wrap up warm, explore gently, and return each evening to somewhere truly cosy.

Here are some of our favourite ways to experience Helmsley and the surrounding countryside during the winter months.

1️⃣ Stay in the Cottage — Your Cosy Winter Retreat

There’s no better place to start than staying right here in Helmsley. Winter is when the cottage really comes into its own — a warm, welcoming space to retreat to after crisp walks and dark-sky evenings. Think flickering fire, long lie-ins, hot drinks, and the simple luxury of having nowhere else you need to be.
2️⃣ Dark Skies Festival (13th February – 1st March)
One of the true highlights of winter in this part of North Yorkshire is the Dark Skies Festival, running from 13th February to 1st March 2026. Helmsley sits on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, an International Dark Sky Reserve, making it an incredible place to look up and reconnect with the night sky.

During the festival you’ll find guided stargazing events, talks, night walks and quiet moments designed to help you experience the stars without light pollution. On a clear night, even a short step outside the cottage can reward you with constellations, planets, and a sense of awe that’s hard to find elsewhere.

3️⃣ Winter Walks Through Helmsley, the River Rye & Cowhouse Bank Woods

Why not visit Cowhouse Bank Woods which is a favourite of ours. Just a short drive from the cottage this area has a large car park, excellent paths and the most amazing views across the vallue over the North York Moors.

It’s an ideal walk for clear winter mornings, dogs who love to explore, and anyone who enjoys being wrapped in nature before heading back into town for warmth, coffee, and cake.

4️⃣ Byland Abbey — Quiet, Timeless & Beautiful
Just a short drive from Helmsley, Byland Abbey is one of the area’s most atmospheric and often overlooked historic sites. In winter, the ruins feel especially poignant — open to the elements, peaceful, and largely free of crowds. It is run by English Heritage, open every day and is free of charge.

it’s a wonderful place for a slow wander, photography, or simply standing still and soaking up centuries of history set against the rolling countryside.

5️⃣ St Gregory’s Minster, Kirkdale
Another hidden gem is St Gregory’s Minster in Kirkdale, nestled quietly in the valley. This ancient church is one of the most important Anglo-Saxon sites in England, yet it remains wonderfully understated.

In winter, its simplicity and stillness are part of the appeal. Step inside to escape the cold, admire the historic sundial and stonework, and enjoy a moment of calm that feels completely removed from modern life.

6️⃣ Helmsley’s Independent Shops & Tearooms
Winter is the perfect excuse to linger indoors. Helmsley’s independent shops, galleries and tearooms offer a warm welcome, whether you’re browsing for locally made gifts or settling in with coffee and cake while the weather does its thing outside.

There’s something deeply comforting about wandering in and out of small shops on a cold day, hands wrapped around a warm mug.
